CARTA Memo for February 2020

February 2020, a new decade! January was such a shock to the system so hopefully, warm weather is coming soon. We have many events coming. Look for dates for our Annual Meeting, To Hell With the Bell, and the Christmas event coming in the next memo. Please try and take part in some of the following events:

***The Teachers’ Convention (CATCA) will be held at Red Deer College on Thursday, February 20 and Friday, February 21. We will once again have a booth and are seeking CARTA volunteers to help greet teachers and pass along information regarding the benefits of belonging to ARTA and CARTA. An ASEBP consultant will be at the booth to answer questions related to benefits. A representative from ARTA will be there to answer questions about ARTA. Teachers with queries regarding their retirement options should be directed to ATRF.

We would like to have 3-4 members at each shift and you do not have to remain at the booth the entire shift as there are non-busy times to visit displays or grab a coffee with a friend.

If you are able to help out Thursday or Friday (morning or afternoon), please call Jim at caretiredteachers@gmail.com

***Wednesday, April 29 CARTA is pleased to be having Biometrics Day all day at St. Leonard’s on the Hill Church. Rachel from ASEBP will be coming with the Biometric machine. In conjunction with this, we will be having some Wellness activities. You must register for all components of the day with Marie at caretiredteachers@gmail.com

In the morning, starting at 9:00, Associate Professor, Ron Schafer from the Burman University will discuss the importance of flexibility, balance, and strengthening exercises. Ron has developed a seniors’ exercise program which covers various dimensions of wellness. He will demonstrate parts of his program and have CARTA and Wolf Creek members participate in his unique program which is relevant for most fitness levels. Be prepared for a fun and friendly challenge. Please register for this event as Ron will be bringing some gym and game equipment.

CARTA extends an invitation to the Wolf Creek Branch to join us for a fun and active wellness day on April 29th.

We will have a pot luck lunch at noon.

In the afternoon, at 1:30 we will have an art session – Paint a Sunset Picture using acrylics on canvas. Previous painting experience is not required. Materials will be provided for those registered.

*** April, May, June 2020  Join the CARTA Team for Time of Your Life. Track your activities for thirty days and send in your time. Please register as soon as possible with Marie at caretiredteachers@gmail.com

*** Retired teachers from Red Deer Public School District can now take advantage of a new fitness discount of over 20% for the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre at Red Deer College! The regular fee for a pass is $45 per month or $450 annually, but Red Deer Public has been able to secure a $350 corporate rate for an annual pass for current and retired teachers. The pass includes access to the fitness centre, running/walking track and squash courts as well as complimentary drop-in classes in a variety of areas including kettlebells, yoga, cycling and weightlifting.  Free parking is also included with the pass. If you would like to purchase a $350 pass, let the staff at the fitness centre main desk know that you are an RDPSD retired teacher and that Rob Moltzahn will vouch for you. Rob is associate superintendent (human resources) at RDPSD and attends the fitness centre almost daily.

***Ink Blots– This writing group continues to be held every second Monday (2:00 PM) at Timberlands library. (Next on Feb. 24) Information is posted on the Library website and in their Link information brochure.

The main focus is sharing our writing with a small accepting group of people. Meeting twice a month keeps us motivated and inspired. New members are welcome!

Having received positive feedback from our writing display, which moved from the Red Deer Hospital corridors to Revera Inglewood, we are planning a project with seniors. Our hope is that it will lead to their own display after we listen to their stories and assist as needed with the written version.

In March, we’ve invited Lacombe author, Fran Kimmel, to our gathering at which she will share a “jackpot of writing exercises”. Can’t wait! You must register for this event. For more information contact Kaye at caretiredteachers@gmail.com
