Malanka in Kelowna
January 18, 2020 was a night to remember. Friends from OKARTA gathered to eat, drink & be merry as we celebrated Malanka.
The pictures tell the story but for those who don’t know, this is the folk holiday celebrated on Ukrainian New Year’s Eve. According to the early Julian Calendar (named after Julius Caesar), Christmas is celebrated on January 7 and New Year’s on January 14, unlike the present day Gregorian Calendar.
Our evening was filled with music, dancing, skits and lots of delicious traditional food. The event, put on by Dolyna Ukrainian Cultural Society in Kelowna, also included a silent auction where some of the proceeds will be sent to a school in the Ukraine. The entertainment, feast and festivity made this a great event. We look forward to next year!
