ARTA’s Annual General Meeting

Attending the ARTA Annual General Meeting (AGM) is truly an education in understanding just how complex this organization has become in its 55+ years. When one considers the administration required of the Group Benefit Plan (added in 1995), it can easily be seen that this is “big business” comprised of over 22 000 members — approximately two-thirds education sector and one-third public and private sector.

Essential components of ARTA’s AGM is the review of the financials and the committees’ yearly reports. The Benefits Plan Trust and the Alberta Retired Teachers’ Charitable Foundation also report to the assembly. Each of the 18 branches include a written report of their year’s activities. It is interesting to read how each branch operates in a slightly different fashion and yet there is the common bond of the profession and healthy aging. Delegates at the meeting are also able to interact and network with the representatives from other branches.

Naturally, as at any AGM, there are elections for the executive and committees and positions. All candidates wishing to serve are invited to speak highlighting their skills and expertise. ARTA. Marilyn Bossert did not seek re-election after successfully serving two years as president. The newly-elected president is Lorna McIllroy (former ARTA Vice President and NWARTA President). Elected was Garry Hoffart of High River as Vice President and Dolaine Koch of Edmonton continues as Treasurer.

Attending the meeting means candidates must be prepared to do a great deal of reading as well as listening as information is presented by the various reports are presented. The growth of NWARTA has allowed for the Branch to send two delegates and the president. In attendance this year were: Russ Snoble, Sue Mills, and Joan Godbout.

There are rewards to the work and responsibility of representing the Branch at AGM. Each year the ARTA staff organizes a themed evening; this year it was Canada all the way. From the appetizers and beverages provided in the foyer, the décor, the musical selections, the menu and even the gifts – Canadiana ruled the evening. It was an excellent job done by the ARTA staff and enjoyed by all who attended. In the Photo Gallery, there is evidence of the great fun had by all. Perhaps you too will be convinced to volunteer your time and service not only at the Branch but also the provincial level.
